Check the operating calendar before you compare the slides

Disney’s two water parks are Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach, and in 2026 there have been periods when both operate. The calendar is still the first thing I would check, because seasonal refurbishment and weather can change the choice.

For the current September 2026 window, Disney says Typhoon Lagoon will temporarily close starting 9 September 2026 and directs guests to Blizzard Beach during that closure. If you are travelling around that changeover, do not build the day from an old blog post — use Disney’s live water-park hours page.

Typhoon Lagoon is tropical-storm fantasy; Blizzard Beach is melting-ski-resort fantasy

The theming is the easy difference. Typhoon Lagoon is Disney’s shipwrecked tropical paradise, with a large wave-pool identity and lush storm-tossed scenery. Blizzard Beach is the deliberately absurd Florida ski resort that “melted”, with snow-themed structures, slides, family water areas and a very different visual feel.

Both can work as a family break from ride-heavy theme parks. I would choose by operating status first, then by the attractions and intensity that suit your group — not because one is universally “better”.

A standard Park Hopper does not include the water parks

Disney explicitly says the normal Park Hopper option does not provide water-park admission. Water-park access can come through an individual water-park ticket or through ticket options such as Water Park and Sports or Park Hopper Plus, depending on the product you buy.

Those products and their visit counts can change, so I would not memorise a price from this article. Compare the live ticket options for your exact trip, especially if you are already buying a multi-day theme-park ticket.

Some Disney Resort guests have a valuable check-in-day benefit in summer 2026

Disney Resorts Collection guests with check-in dates from 26 May through 8 September 2026 can receive water-park admission on their check-in day under Disney’s current summer benefit, subject to the stated eligibility and availability rules. Disney says the benefit is for either Typhoon Lagoon or Blizzard Beach and cannot simply be moved to another day.

If your arrival falls inside that window, this can turn an otherwise awkward “room is not ready yet” afternoon into a useful water-park day. But it is date-specific: visitors arriving from 9 September should not assume the summer 2026 benefit still applies.

Treat a Disney water park as a real park day for small children

A water park can feel like a rest day to adults and still be a huge sensory/physical day for young kids. Check attraction height and swim-confidence requirements, choose a clear meeting point, and do not assume a confident pool swimmer will be comfortable with a wave pool or fast slide.

For toddlers and cautious swimmers, I would plan around the calmer family areas and shade first, then add bigger attractions only if the child actually wants them. A “we paid for it, so you have to ride it” strategy is even less useful in swimwear.

Florida weather can pause the day even when the park is officially open

Disney notes that water parks can be affected by weather, seasonal rehabilitation, capacity and other closures. Lightning is the practical one most travellers notice. Leave enough flexibility that a weather interruption does not destroy the rest of the itinerary.

If the forecast looks unstable, I avoid pairing the water park with a non-refundable evening commitment that assumes everyone will leave at one exact time. The point of the day is to reduce pressure, not create a second set of deadlines.

Use a simple water-park rhythm: arrive, hit priorities, then float

My preferred rhythm is to arrive with one or two priority attractions, do them while energy is high, then let the day become progressively less ambitious. Lazy river, wave pool, family areas, lunch and shade should not feel like “wasted time” — they are the reason a water-park day can break up a theme-park-heavy week.

Check the closing time before you arrive. Water parks often have shorter hours than the main theme parks, and operating hours vary by date.

Bring less, but bring the things that save the afternoon

  • Secure swimwear that works on slides.
  • Water shoes only where allowed/comfortable — attraction rules can vary.
  • Reef- and park-appropriate sun protection and a dry change of clothes.
  • A waterproof plan for phones/cards rather than carrying a full theme-park bag everywhere.
  • One warm layer for the air-conditioned ride home if your group gets cold easily.

Do not pack the day around an assumed locker or rental price from an old article; check Disney’s current guest information if those costs matter to your budget.

Which Disney water park should you choose?

If only one is operating, the decision is made for you. If both are open, compare the live attraction list with your group’s swim confidence and theming preference. Typhoon Lagoon usually wins for travellers drawn to the tropical wave-pool atmosphere; Blizzard Beach wins for families who love the ski-resort theme and its attraction mix.

I would never sacrifice a good available water-park day because an old comparison called the other park “number one”. Operating status, weather and your family matter more.
