What SFB is — and is not
Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB) is a smaller airport in Sanford, northeast of the main Orlando tourism corridor. It is a genuine Orlando-area airport, but it is not a second terminal of Orlando International Airport (MCO), and the two airports are far enough apart that you should treat them as completely different arrival plans.
The first rule is simple: check the airport code before you book a flight, hotel transfer or rental car. A cheap itinerary labelled “Orlando” can be excellent value, but a traveller who assumes every Orlando flight lands at MCO can easily book the wrong transfer or underestimate the drive to Disney, Universal or International Drive.
Price the whole journey, not just the airfare
Compare the SFB fare plus baggage, seat fees and ground transport with the best realistic MCO option. A modest airfare saving can disappear once a long rideshare or private transfer is added; a large saving can still make SFB worthwhile.
Who SFB suits best
SFB works best when your preferred airline or route is materially better there, when the fare difference is significant, or when you plan to rent a car anyway. It can also suit repeat Orlando visitors who are comfortable driving and do not mind starting or ending the trip outside the main resort corridor.
It is less attractive for a very short break, a late-night arrival with young children, a first-time visitor relying entirely on hotel transport, or anyone whose itinerary is tightly packed from the first morning. In those situations the extra transfer time has a higher practical cost than it appears to on a flight-search screen.
Ground transport from SFB
SFB's official passenger information lists rideshares, taxis and pre-arranged shuttles, with the designated pickup area directly across from Baggage Claim 1–3. That is much simpler than hunting around for an unofficial meeting point, but availability and pricing still vary by time of day and destination.
- Rideshare: usually the easiest on-demand option for couples and small groups. Check the live quote after landing rather than budgeting from an old screenshot.
- Taxi: useful if you prefer a traditional cab or rideshare demand is surging. Confirm the approximate fare before departure for a long trip to the resort areas.
- Pre-arranged shuttle or private transfer: often the least stressful option for larger groups, child-seat requirements, mobility needs or very late arrivals. SFB publishes a list of permitted/pre-arranged operators, but compare providers rather than assuming the first listing is best.
- Rental car: often makes the strongest case for SFB if you already need a vehicle for the rest of your holiday.

Rental cars at SFB
SFB's current airport map shows several major rental companies across the street from the terminal in the Welcome Center area, with others in a nearby dedicated rental building. That compact layout can make collecting a car straightforward compared with a larger airport, but the normal rental-car cautions still apply.
Compare the final price after airport fees, insurance choices, additional-driver charges and toll programmes. Central Florida has extensive electronic tolling, and rental companies can apply their own toll-service fees on top of the road toll itself. If two flights are close in total cost and schedule, MCO will usually be the easier choice for a Disney, Universal or International Drive holiday. If SFB saves a substantial amount or gives you a uniquely convenient nonstop route, the extra road transfer can be a perfectly reasonable trade.
A sensible SFB arrival plan
- Confirm the airport code on the booking confirmation.
- Decide before departure whether you are using rideshare, taxi, shuttle or rental car.
- If travelling with children or mobility equipment, confirm the vehicle setup rather than hoping the next available car will suit.
- Keep the first evening light. A delayed flight plus a long transfer is a poor combination with a hard dinner reservation or early park commitment.
- Save your hotel's full street address, not just its resort name, so the driver or navigation app targets the correct property.
Leaving from SFB
Build your departure timing backwards from the airline's recommended airport arrival time, then add a realistic road buffer. Orlando-area traffic is variable and the longer approach to SFB gives you less room to recover from a motorway incident than a short hotel-to-airport hop.
