The three main tiers
Disney groups its on-site resorts into value, moderate and deluxe tiers (with a further deluxe villa category for larger, more apartment-style accommodations), priced accordingly. Every tier gets access to Disney's free internal transportation network and other core on-site perks — what changes between tiers is room size and quality, theming detail, dining variety, and generally how close a resort sits to the parks.
Value resorts
Disney's most affordable on-site tier — smaller standard rooms, simpler theming, and typically a longer bus ride to the parks compared with pricier tiers. A sensible choice for travellers who want genuine on-site perks (transportation network, Disney atmosphere) without paying for extensive amenities they may not use much.
Moderate resorts
A step up in room size and theming detail, often built around a more elaborate central theme with larger pool areas and more dining variety than value resorts. This tier tends to be the sweet spot for families wanting more space and atmosphere without paying deluxe-level prices.
Deluxe resorts
Disney's top on-site tier, including many of the resorts closest to the parks (some within walking distance or a short monorail/boat ride of Magic Kingdom or EPCOT specifically). Expect larger rooms, more extensive amenities and dining, and the shortest possible commute to the parks — the trade-off is a significantly higher nightly rate than the other tiers.

Compare against Lake Buena Vista or Kissimmee before assuming on-site is necessary

Where Deluxe Villas fit
Deluxe Villas range from studios to multi-bedroom villas. Larger units can add separate living areas, kitchens or kitchenettes and laundry facilities, which can materially change the economics for multi-generational groups or longer stays. Compare the total group cost against booking two or three standard rooms, not just the headline nightly rate.
Which benefits are actually different by tier?
All Disney Resorts Collection hotel guests currently receive 30-minute Early Theme Park Entry at all four theme parks and access to Disney's complimentary transportation network. Disney says Early Theme Park Entry continues through 2027. Extended Evening Theme Park Hours are different: eligible Disney Deluxe Resort and Deluxe Villa guests, plus certain other listed hotels, can use them at select parks on select nights. Check the live calendar before treating that benefit as guaranteed for a specific stay date.
Transportation differences matter
Every tier has Disney transportation, but convenience varies enormously. Some resorts are primarily bus-based; Pop Century, Art of Animation and Caribbean Beach use the Skyliner; selected Deluxe resorts can offer monorail, boat or even walking access to a park. If your trip heavily favours one or two parks, transport geography can matter more than the tier label.
Room configuration matters more than the label
Check the exact room category for bed configuration, pull-down beds, balconies, bathroom layout, kitchen facilities and maximum occupancy. For a family with teenagers or several adults, a practical sleeping layout can be worth more than an upgraded lobby or a larger feature pool.
When Deluxe is easiest to justify
Deluxe pricing is easiest to justify when you plan resort time, value signature dining or want the shortest possible park access. If you leave at opening and return after fireworks every night, much of the premium may go unused. Value or Moderate can be the smarter choice for an intense park-first itinerary.
When off-site wins
Disney benefits are useful, but they are not automatically worth any price difference. A larger off-site suite in Lake Buena Vista can beat a Disney room for families needing a kitchen, separate bedrooms or lower nightly cost.
